    Synopsis

"More than 30 years ago, Dick Grote developed a powerful, nonpunitive discipline system that turned a troubled Frito-Lay plant from a hotbed of employee sabotage and toxic relations into a productive, respectful environment - one where employees took personal responsibility for their behavior, and managers helped problem employees become productive players." This new edition of the bestselling Discipline Without Punishment has been updated to help a new generation of managers and HR professionals adopt a positive, proven method for getting problem employees back on track. Packed with real-life examples, dialogues, worksheets, and a no-nonsense sensibility that busy readers will appreciate, the book remains an eye-opening, practical guide to making your disciplinary system equitable and effective.

January 14, 2007: The state agency that I work for uses this system. It is excellent. It is NOT a weak system, but gives workers opportunities to change their behavior w/o using the old punative system. Puts the 'monkey' on the workers back.

November 26, 2006: Loaded with Good Information & Easy to Use I work for a state government agency and we use Grote's discipline w/o punishment (DWOP)& his performance appraisal systems. Both are excellent. This guide is a great reference for discipline. I have 'highlighted' and written all inside mine. Provides straightforward, very useful information. I have talked with Mr. Grote on the phone and he is very helpful, friendly, and enthusiastic about wanting supervisors to be knowledgable when it comes to dealing with their employees. When our agency changed over to DWOP, I thought 'this is going to be a joke/too soft'. However, I have had to use it all the way up to decision-making leave and resignation of 2 employees and it works. It puts the responsibility on the employee as to how far you (the supervisor) have to go within the DWOP system based on the employees actions. Involves everything from coaching to resignation/termination of employment. Covers how to document what the employee is doing and what steps you have taken. Helps you to 'build your case' should the employee continue to have problems.
