Synopsis

When Sofie Metropolis decided to stop being a waitress and start being a private detective, she had no idea what she was getting into.  With only a few cases under her belt, Sofie has inherited a dead woman's mean-spirited Jack Russell; fallen hard for a mysterious, charming Australian bounty hunter; and gained a rep for an itchy trigger finger.  She even shot one of her clients!

Sofie's mom suspects Sofie's dad is having an affair, and Sofie's seen enough cheating spouses to know that her father is keeping secrets.  And though Jake Porter is more available than ever, Sofie finds herself torn between the Australian she barely knows and a handsome, available Greek who knows that the fastest way to Sofie's heart is through a bakery.

Searching for a missing dry cleaner who left behind a brand-new Mercedes and a not-so-brand-new wife, Sofie is attacked by . . . a plastic-swathed suit?  Or was it one of Tony DiPiazza's goons? Tony being the junior-league Mobster who has his own reasons to want to get his finely-manicured hands on the dry cleaner's account books.

If Sofie's not careful, her favorite kicks are going to be replaced by a pair of cement overshoes . . . .

Publishers Weekly

Five months have passed since Sofie Metropolis caught her would-be husband, "Thomas-the-Toad," flagrante delicto with her maid of honor on their wedding day in Carrington's Sofie Metropolis (2005). In this cute if predictable sequel, the zany Greek-American from Astoria, Queens, is a PI-in-training, working on mundane cases for her uncle Spyros's investigative agency. When Apostolis Pappas (aka Uncle Tolly), the popular elderly owner of the neighborhood dry cleaners, goes missing, Sofie jumps at the chance to find him. The only catch is Uncle Tolly might have been laundering money for a sexy Italian mobster. Carrington (nom de plume for a Greek-American husband-and-wife writing team) depicts Sofie's world with the nutty sweetness of baklava. With the focus on fun rather than blood, this chick-lite mystery further develops Sophie's relationship with Jake Porter, the handy but possibly dangerous Aussie bounty hunter, who adds just the right amount of delectable sexual tension to this crime confection. Customer Rating for this product is 4 out of 5 entertaining chick noir
A reviewer, A reviewer, 07/12/2008

In Queens, New York, her Aunt Sotiria is panic stricken someone abducted a corpse ready for display. She begs and demands and invokes their Greek blood ties to persuade her niece Sofie Metropolis, who runs a successful private investigative firm, to find the purloined body before the mourners start arriving to view an empty casket. Sotiria worries that losing a stiff she was working on might prove bad for her business. --- Sofie is also working on finding proof that proves low life Johnny Laughton is innocent of the murder charge of killing his affluent former girlfriend, whose body has never been found. She also prepares for the trick or treat crowd, her Greek-American mother wanting legal grandchildren, her broken hearted secretary and a necrophilia living like the dead next door. Life is good and normal for the sleuth as she enjoys quality time with Greek pastry baker Dino Antonopoulos and enigmatic Jake Porter. --- The fourth Sofie Metropolis private investigative tale (see DIRTY LAUNDRY and FOUL PLAY) is as always an entertaining chick noir as the heroine works her Queens’ caseload including the personal hunks in her life. The story line hops around a lot as Sofie works the Sotiria plea bargain, the Laughton case, and her loved life while eluding her Greek-American momma’s demands. This is a fun urban mystery series. --- Harriet Klausner

“Lori and Tony Karayianni aka Tori Carrington gives Sofie Metropolis her second delightful outing with DIRTY LAUNDRY (Forge hardcover/May 2006). Sofie Metropolis, P.I. is on the job in the Greek-American neighborhood of Astoria, Queens, NY working for her absentee Uncle Spyros. The local dry cleaner, Uncle Tolly has mysteriously disappeared and his wife hires Sofie to find her husband’s body so she can sell his new Mercedes. Sofie discovers two sets of books so she’s sure the Mafia must be involved. She has also been hired to find Fred, the pet ferret of a little girl in a wheelchair. Plus Sofie has even been asked by her own mother to investigate her father, who she suspects is cheating on her! When Sofie almost ends up thrown over a bridge in cement overshoes, good thing that hunky, Aussie bounty hunter, Jake Porter is still around to rescue Sofie’s butt! Sofie Metropolis is absolutely adorable with her Jack Russell terrier, Muffy, who has a bad gas problem. Run don’t walk to your nearest bookstore to pick up your copy of DIRTY LAUNDRY so that Sofie, her loved ones and comic capers can endear herself to your heart like she did mine!”
