      Synopsis

Whether you own one or are close with someone who does, it’s pretty easy to recognize the importance of the penis. But in fact there is next to no reliable information on nearly every man’s and many women’s favorite little friend. Now, in Dick, two women doctors boldly provide readers with a much-needed handbook that guides, educates, and dispels all the common misconceptions about the penis. In open and direct language interspersed with humorous word play and funny anecdotes, Drs. Michele Moore and Caroline de Costa thoroughly describe the anatomy, functions, proper hygiene, safety, and effective handling of the most friendly male appendage. Other key topics include: size (does it matter?), condoms, sex, premature ejaculation, as well as infections, infertility, injuries, and cancer. Written for both men and women, young and old, Dick promises to teach, entertain, and demystify for the benefit of everyone involved. Including real-life stories taken from the authors’ own medical practices, Dick offers a comprehensive, practical, and entertaining guide to the penis—and all its ups and downs.

      Library Journal

In the past, it was unacceptable to talk about the penis in public, but if this and other books are any indication, the subject has come out in the open. Moore and de Costa, Australian medical practitioners, have collected everything readers have always wanted to know about the penis but were afraid to ask. Basic information about penile anatomy, function, circumcision (but nothing on restoration), hygiene, sperm, disorders, and impotence is included. Unfortunately, beyond the lewd title, the authors don't present enough information to sustain prurient interest (although the dirty-minded will enjoy the more than 400 euphemisms for the male member) or to educate the seriously perplexed. Public libraries fielding legitimate questions about the male sex organs can locate equally accurate information in general consumer health manuals like The Merck Manual of Medical Information, which have the advantage of straightforward and understandable language. The "dick-tionary" appendix and the supplemental reading list, which includes a reference to Alfred Kinsey's 1948 landmark study, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, are unlikely to attract the same readers. A marginal purchase at best.-James Swanton, Harlem Hosp. Lib., New York Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

September 20, 2004: I got this book for my partner to help with a little problem - I read one of the other books these ladies wrote and found it very helpful. I was a bit apprehensive about the cover but inside the book has very good information, it's funny but never crude and it has really good detail and suggestions for problems especially for (heterosexual) couples.Thoroughly recommended,Queenie
