This is the second edition of this two-volume comprehensive textbook on principles, imaging, and diagnosis by sonography. The first edition was released at the RSNA in 1991. The technology, imaging accuracy, and potential applications of ultrasound have changed dramatically in the last six years. The purpose of this book is to build on the framework of the first edition and include the latest state-of-the-art concepts including color and power Doppler, hysterosonography, laparoscopic sonography, and ultrasound guided interventional procedures. This book can serve as a reference for practicing radiologists. In addition its organization and excellent illustrations make it particularly good for sonographers and residents just beginning to learn ultrasound. There are many excellent line drawings included within each chapter which complement the text. The ultrasounds are all of the highest quality and present the pathology well. The first edition of this book is one of the most commonly used textbooks in the field of ultrasound. Purpose:The purpose is to be the most comprehensive reference for diagnostic ultrasound worldwide. In the seven years since the last edition, diagnostic ultrasound has increased significantly in both scope and quality of examination. This edition has been greatly expanded and improved to meet these advances in ultrasound, including improvements in readability and image quality.
Audience:This book is written for anyone interested in diagnostic ultrasonography as it relates to patient care including, but not limited to, physicians, medical students, and sonographers. The four editors and 100 authors are all experts in the field of ultrasound.
Features:This two-volume book is composed of 62 chapters, 2000 pages, and over 5000 images. The first volume deals with the physics of ultrasound, the thorax, abdomen, pelvis, small parts, vascular and intraoperative ultrasound. The second volume deals with obstetrics, fetal and pediatric sonography. Each chapter is subtitled at the beginning, allowing for quick reference to a particular area of interest. The images, with comparison CT, MR, and accompanying drawings are of excellent quality, significantly increased and improved from the previous edition, with many in color. Tables highlight important points. The section on obstetrical and fetal ultrasound has been particularly expanded. New techniques, includingimprovements in color and power Doppler, high-resolution transducers, harmonics, and ultrasound contrast agents are well described. The index and reference lists are comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date.
Assessment:The previous edition was the standard reference in diagnostic ultrasound. This new edition has made a great leap forward, with significant improvements in content, readability, and image quality. It is current, accurate and comprehensive. It is well worth the price for anyone performing or interested in learning ultrasound.
