Reviewer:Ivan Damjanov, MD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description:This third edition of the leading textbook of tumor histopathology appears seven years after the second edition.
Purpose:The main purpose is to provide surgical pathologists with an encyclopedic and comprehensive, modern and up-to-date reference and textbook of tumor histopathology. Building upon the strength of the previous two editions, it has superbly met this goal.
Audience:The book is intended for practicing surgical pathologists and pathologists in training. It will be useful to surgeons and clinical oncologists, and it should be part of all hospital libraries as a ready reference for those who visit the field of surgical oncology only occasionally, such as medical students and internal medicine residents. Dr. Fletcher is one of the leaders in the field of surgical pathology, a highly respected consultant, and an internationally known medical lecturer and writer. He has few equals in his field. He has assembled a stellar team of contributors mostly from North America, but also from other parts of the world.
Features:The third edition has all the positive attributes of its previous editions. It is divided into 32 chapters, 30 of which are devoted to specific organ systems. The last two chapters deal with electron microscopy and molecular genetic of tumors. All major tumors and most, if not all, minor neoplastic entities in the human body are covered. The book is masterfully illustrated with high quality color photographs and contains many useful tables. References are well chosen and current. The text is succinct, to the point, andskillfully edited.
Assessment:It is hard to imagine how a multiauthored textbook of surgical pathology could be compiled better than this fully revised and updated edition of the preeminent book simply known as the "Fletcher." Ever since it appeared for the first time in 1995, it has been quite popular with practicing pathologists and residents alike and, accordingly, the publication of this third edition was a highly anticipated event. By all evidence, the wait was well justified, and the book will satisfy even the most persnickety among its readers. It is current and for a major textbook, it could not be more up to date. It is authoritative, reliable, and full of insight, providing guidance in the daily practice of surgical pathology. It is encyclopedic and full of references to the newly described entities. Above all, it is readable and contains few if any unnecessary asides or fruitless theoretical discussions. The emphasis is on histopathology, but a complete contemporary work-up of the tumor and tumor-bearing patient is constantly advocated. The inspiring, almost philosophical introduction written by the editor, containing his surgical pathology credo, should be required reading for all those who deal with clinical oncology. This superb book deserves to be widely read. It belongs among the core titles of pathology, and should be in private pathology libraries. Its primary location, however, should be in the surgical pathology sign-out room, so that it is readily available to housestaff. I would also recommend it to all general hospital libraries. It is the best currently available multiauthored textbook of surgical pathology of tumors.
