The previous edition was published in 1994. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive source of information about oral healthcare for infants, children, teenagers, and individuals with special needs. Placing considerable emphasis on preventive procedures is certainly a worthy objective, and the editors succeed in this area. The book is written for dental students, pediatric dental residents, and practicing pediatric dentists. General dentists may also find it to be a useful reference. The editors and contributors are well known for the six previous editions of this textbook. Every aspect of pediatric dentistry is examined in this book, including behavior management, growth and development, nutrition, trauma, and management of the medically compromised patient. Completeness is the strong point. With over 800 pages and hundreds of photographs, every topic relevant to pediatric dentistry is examined in depth. This book is the standard against which other pediatric dental textbooks should be measured. The book is current, complete, and "user friendly." Considering how rapidly pediatric dentistry is changing, this updated edition is not only welcome, it is necessary.

The sixth edition of this book serves as a comprehensive guide to the scientific basis of dental care for the pediatric patient as well as a practical reference for diagnoses and treatment modalities currently used in pediatric dentistry. The authors' stated objectives were (1) to provide undergraduate and postgraduate dental students with knowledge sufficient for providing ""efficient and superior comprehensive oral health care"" for patients served by pediatric specialists and (2) to serve as a current reference for experienced clinicians. The intended audience is students in pediatric dentistry at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level as well as experienced clinicians. There are several illustrations and charts that are helpful in understanding important issues described in the text. Lack of any color in the photographs and illustrations decreases the overall visual effectiveness of the book. This is a good fundamental textbook for students in pediatric dentistry. Because of the authors' high visibility and profile, previous editions have been deemed ""classic"" texts and are thus used in many schools. The users of this book would be better served if it were revised more frequently than every five or so years. Also, the book is a little too ""inbred"" with coauthors from Indiana University. The chapters on practice management, HIV, interceptive orthodontics, trauma, and behavior management care are very good but would benefit from expanison by authors from other institutions.
