Description:This is an elaborate and reader-friendly guide to the basics - theoretical as well as clinical of dental radiography. This third edition includes an interactive CD-ROM with animations, case studies, and exercises. Previous editions were published in 2000 and 1996.
Purpose:The main objective of the authors is to provide a theoretical overview of the basics in dental radiography and to implement in detail the associated clinical techniques. The authors succeed with this student-friendly, step-by-step guide for future dental radiographers.
Audience:This is a basic teaching guide for dental students and dental hygiene students.
Features:The six parts of this manual provide a step-by-step guide to learning basic radiographic skills: radiation physics, biology and safety; dental x-ray equipment basics; dental radiographer basics; dental radiographic techniques; normal anatomy; and an introduction to interpretation and diagnosis. It provides an exhaustive introduction to the basics and clinical techniques of dental radiography with clear objectives, key words, tables, and figures. Exercises end each chapter and are included on the CD-ROM. Digital and advanced imaging topics are only briefly introduced. For these topics as well as for any detailed radiographic interpretation of pathologies, more detailed books should be consulted.
Assessment:This is a very clear, step-by-step teaching guide for future radiographers, introducing basic principles and techniques. The third editionoffers some additional teaching aids, like the CD-ROM. This manual, however, does not cover advanced oral radiology topics like advanced techniques and interpretation. White and Pharoah do include the latter in Oral Radiology: Principles and Interpretations, 5th edition (Mosby, 2004) , making it as complete as an oral radiology bible.
