Textbook Information
The long standing nursing shortage has prompted many institutions to rely on nurses to delegate critical tasks. Delegation of Nursing Care establishes safe delegation as an indispensable skill in delivering quality patient care. The book discusses the demanding roles of a professional nurse and explores the elements of decision making nurses use most. It also highlights the importance of communication, time management, and accountability, and is designed to build the diverse skills needed in the world of nursing.
Reviewer:Carole A. Kenner, RNC, DNS, FAAN (University of Oklahoma College of Nursing)
Description:This book's focus is to help the nursing student to understand the art and science of delegation. It provides the theoretical, practical, and legal foundations for delegation.
Purpose:The purpose is to educate nursing students about delegation and how delegation is affected by the expertise of each party involved as well as the legal parameters as dictated by a scope of practice. Practical tips and exercises are given to afford the reader the opportunity to apply the knowledge derived from the book. These worthy objectives are met.
Audience:This book is intended for student nurses according to the author. The authors are well known in the field of nursing education.
Features:The book starts with the definition of delegation and then moves into the description of the Five Rights of Delegation as defined by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. There is a discussion of the differences in responsibilities/scopes of practice among healthcare team members, as well as the need for good, clear communication including differences shown by the various Myers-Briggs personalities. The final two chapters describe the need for time management and priority setting in care as well as the legal aspects of delegation. The glossary is a nice addition with concise terms and definitions. The layout of the chapters, beginning with narrative/descriptive information followed by review questions, critical thinking exercises, Web and print resources, and suggested readings helps to guide the student through each topicalarea.
Assessment:There is no comparable book on the market that is without legalese and with as much opportunity for practice scenarios to apply the book's theoretical information. It is a wonderful addition to the student's library.
