This first solo novel by Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress Benson reads like an R-rated mash up of The Devil Wears Prada and the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. The author mixes contemporary humor with elements of mythology for excellent comedic effect. With this first book in a projected series, as often happens in series starters, the exposition bogs down the plot at times. Calliope seems to meander around the landscape of Hell endlessly, in a variety of forms. Despite this flaw, fans of urban fantasy (and of Buffy) will likely find it enjoyable to join a new, flawed (whiny and spoiled but genuinely growing throughout the book) heroine on her quest.
