    Synopsis

The sixth mystery in the acclaimed and bestselling Adam Dalgliesh series, which led Newsweek to crown P. D. James "the new queen of crime."

An evil-tempered forensic scientist is put to death, putting many of his colleagues out of misery. Dr. Lorrimer appeared to be the picture of a bloodless, coldly efficient scientist. Only when his brutally slain body is discovered and his secret past dissected does the image begin to change. Once again, Chief Inspector Adam Dalgliesh learns that there is more to human beings than meets the eye–and more to solving a murder than the obvious clues.

"A craftsman with a poet's vision...[P.D. James] not only detects evil but attempts to uncover the more elusive–and enduring–enigmas of the human psyche that lead to it."–Time

    From the Compact Disc edition.

    Annotation

Dr. Lorrimer was the picture of a cold scientist. Only when his murdered body was discovered and his past dissected did his image begin to change.

    Biography

With morality-conscious mysteries that do not linger on gore, P. D. James is a sort of anti-Lecter. Her tales are told in the whodunit tradition that prizes character, restraint and the slow unraveling of both a mystery and a social niche.

    Not Her Bestby AnaLeigh63

August 08, 2009: Not my favorite P.D. James. It seemed cold, detached. I didn't find the characters engaging. By contrast, I loved 'Shroud for a Nightingale.' If you're a fan of P.D. James and Adam Dalgliesh, read it anyway. My first P.D. James was 'Death in Holy Orders.' I've gone back and started from beginning of series. I also greatly enjoyed James's Cordelia Gray series and the standalone, 'Innocent Blood.'

I Also Recommend: Maisie Dobbs (Maisie Dobbs Series #1), Still Life (Armand Gamache Series #1), A Great Deliverance (Inspector Lynley Series #1), Shroud for a Nightingale (Adam Dalgliesh Series #4), Innocent Blood.
