    Synopsis

He's a "lemon drop wrapped in licorice": tall, dark, handsome, and as smooth as his silk shirts and leather jacket. He can discuss everything from art to world events, he's traveled the world, and he owns a Jeep, a condo, and a jazz CD collection. But best of all, twenty-three-year-old Jonathan Hathaway, the new track coach and the principal's son, has his golden eyes set on Keisha Montgomery.

In her senior year of high school, still recovering from the suicide of her ex-boyfriend, Keisha's thrilled to have someone treat her like a woman rather than a girl. As Jonathan tells her, she's a butterfly ready to try her wings — much too mature for high school boys, whose only deep thoughts are words from rap songs. Jonathan makes her feel alive again; he seems like the answer to all her dreams and the cure to all her nightmares.

Gifts wrapped with silver ribbons begin to mysteriously appear on her doorstep, and Keisha is swept off her feet. But events take a terrifying turn, and suddenly darkness overwhelms her life.... As Keisha struggles to put her world back in perspective, she learns the power and the danger of silence, and discovers the secret gifts that had been waiting for her all along.

    Annotation

Recovering from the recent suicide of her ex-boyfriend, senior class president Keisha Montgomery finds herself attracted to a dangerous, older man.

    VOYA

The author does not falsely portray teenage life as entirely blissful. Instead, the book captures both the hardships and the joys of teenage life. The charming characters live in a realistic world full of pain, stress, and joy, wonderfully accented with romance. This modern book reads easily, so presumably the story will appeal to teenagers. The thought-provoking story provides life lessons for teens and adults alike. August 17, 2009: Again for this book I didn't read the whole series, however this book was so good that I bet the whole series is just as awesome! The writing and story have 5's because the realism and thrill are to the point where you are waiting to read the next chapter. I finished it in a reasonable time period. The author studied pschology and one can tell, not in a bad way though. It's intriguing and the complexity will have you wanting to reread it. Plus share it with your friends! This book is good for an escape or summer read.

I Also Recommend: Secrets in the Shadows (Bluford High Series #3), Blood is Thicker (Bluford High Series #8), Brothers in Arms (Bluford High Series #9), Summer of Secrets (Bluford High Series #10), What Goes Around.

June 13, 2009: I have been using Ms. Draper's books with my high school students for fifteen years and they never fail to get my reluctant readers reading. Every year I have a student say to me that this is the first book they have every read from begining to end. This is the thrid book in the Hazelwood trilogy, but you do not have to have read the other two to understand what is going on with the plot or the characters. Each book in the trilogy is a stand alone story. The main character, Keisha, shares what happened after her exboyfriend Andy took his own life at the end of their junior of high school. The story is told in flashback as Keisha is about to graduate high school. This book will keep your students talking and reading.
