The master of the new noir, Dennis Lehane magnificently evokes the dignity and savagery of working-class Boston in this terrifying tale of darkness and redemption.
Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro's latest client is a prominent Boston psychiatrist running scared from a vengeful Irish mob. The private investigators know something about cold-blooded retribution. Born and bred on the mean streets of blue-collar Dorchester, they've seen the darkness that lives in the hearts of the unfortunate. But an evil for which even they are unprepared is about to strike as secrets long-dormant erupt, setting off a chain of violent murders that will stain everything—including the truth.
Haunting . . . Heart-pounding suspenseful.
More Reviews and RecommendationsBoston and its environs are the setting for most of Dennis Lehane’s fiction. From gritty inner-city motels to the lavish suburbs, Lehane brings a Boston subculture and its vivid characters to life in his detective novels. Lehane fans return time and time again for his tense psychological thrillers that chip away at secrets deep within the human soul.

August 25, 2009: This is by far my favorite book ever. I have read all of Lehane's work and he is my favorite author. This story was the most addicting of all of his books for me, which is saying alot. The man is a master of the detective fiction novel and his PI's Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro are so realistic and well written that it is easy to think of them as real people.
This story is incredible because of the dark and violent tone of brutality and loss. Lehane makes this novel so fast paced and addicting that I have read it atleast 5 times since buying it and will definitely read it more.I Also Recommend: Gone, Baby, Gone (Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro Series #4), Prayers for Rain (Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro Series #5), Mystic River, Shutter Island.

December 07, 2008: This book is the second book in the Patrick Kensie series and blows the first book away and takes off with even more in depth looks into the characters than the first book did. The book starts slow introducing the some new characters and how Patrick and Angie have progressed from the first book. All of the events that occur in the book including the at first boring case that Patrick and Angie are assigned to end up connecting when the plot takes off as the pair try and catch a serial killer before they and their friends and families become victims. As in the last book this book also connects the events of the past to the present but to a new extent when the past has directly influenced the serial killer and helps the detectives figure out who the serial killer is and his motives. This book has a very dark setting and mood as the detectives find themselves in danger. Even with the dark tone there are many humorous parts to the book. The connections between characters become increasingly important through the book and show the fear that all the characters feel. The last one hundred pages are some of the most exciting in any book I have ever read. The plot is constantly revolving and the twists in the plot hook readers interest. This book can be recommended to anyone who likes drama but is for mature audiences only.
