    Synopsis

I see him and know what this turmoil inside of me means: He's the one. My forever.

kayla is the nature lover, the all-American beauty who can't understand why she's so drawn to distant, brooding Lucas. Adopted as a young child, she has no way of knowing that she's inherited a terrifying—and thrilling—gene that will change her life forever.

lucas is dangerous, gorgeous . . . and a werewolf. As leader of the Dark Guardians, shape-shifters who gather deep within the state park, he has sworn to protect his pack. But when Lucas finds his true soul mate, his love could put them all in harm's way.

As Lucas and Kayla struggle with their feelings for each other, a greater danger lurks: Humans have discovered the Dark Guardians and are planning their destruction. Kayla must choose between the life she knows and the love she feels certain is her destiny.

    School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—Kayla Madison is excited about spending the summer as a sherpa in the dense national forest. She gets to reconnect with her friends from last year's guide group, including the mysterious and extremely attractive Lucast. Kayla is also hoping that the park is a chance to come face to face with the demons from her past. It was here that, at the age of five, she witnessed her parents' accidental murder by hunters who mistook them for wolves. Kayla's adventures begin with her 17th birthday and the opportunity to lead a group of scientists under the guidance of Dr. Keane into the park to study wolves and their behaviors. Things soon begin to spin out of control as Kayla discovers what Dr. Keane and his group are really up to. She faces difficult choices that not only make sense of her past but will also have life-altering effects on her future. Hawthorne expertly weaves romance with the supernatural, cloaking them with danger and suspense. The plot is fast paced and full of action but ends a little too neatly and at times seems a bit rushed. However, the author does a good job giving readers a natural view of the legends and myths behind werewolves and their evolution. This is a good series to watch and a must-have for those libraries with a vampire/werewolf following.—Donna Rosenblum, Floral Park Memorial High School, NY

November 04, 2009: I read tons of fanfiction, some of it is okay, and some if completely fabulous. But most of it is very obviously amateur. This book, while good for a light read (hot werewolf guys? fun), feels very amateur and juvenile- the writing is not at all up to par with many that of many other books. There's a little emotion for the reader but not that wrenching emotional attachment that is awful but oh so good at the same time.

I might recommend it, but my recommendation would certainly be "borrow it".

In a few words: a cute, basic, fanservice that should be borrowed at the library.
