Synopsis

Daniels and Worthingham's Muscle Testing: Techniques of Manual Examination, 8th Edition is the original handbook of manual evaluation of muscular strength. In addition to offering traditional methods for assessing and grading skeletal muscle function, the book provides a comprehensive section on muscle anatomy and innervations that rounds out the testing chapters by linking muscle topography and function. This edition includes a new DVD of tests and procedures video clips that supplement the tests explained in the book.

  • Helpful Hints and Substitutions boxes provide additional tips and highlight muscle substitutions that may occur during a test to ensure greater accuracy in testing.
  • Clearly identifies each muscle in the body by a constant reference number that can be found indexed in the Alphabetical List of Muscles by Region and Ready Reference Anatomy to help the reader quickly identify any muscle.
  • Richly illustrated to clearly show testing sequences, muscle anatomy, and muscle innervation for more accurate practice.

  • Companion DVD features video of over 100 muscle tests illustrating the art and technique of muscle testing in a clinical setting.
  • Updated references for each chapter feature the most current information available.

Reviewer:Christopher James Hughes, PT, PhD, OCS, C (Slippery Rock University)
Description:The authors freely admit that the only changes to this edition of this iconic text are revised illustrations and the inclusion of a DVD. However, both items significantly contribute to the publication and will assist readers in learning the fundamental skills needed for manual muscle testing.
Purpose:The authors' purpose is to allow readers to quickly learn the material by not only reading but also viewing the video clips that show proper techniques. The authors have met their goal of further assisting in the comprehension of this material.
Audience:This book is suitable for any clinician who needs to assess strength as part of a patient evaluation. This includes students as well as practicing clinicians who need to refresh their knowledge in this area. The authors are legendary and well known for their contributions to the physical therapy profession.
Features:The nine chapters are accompanied by clean line illustrations that show patient positioning, direction of motion, and direction of resistance provided by the examiner. The principles of manual muscle testing are discussed in chapter one, followed by chapters on the neck, trunk, and upper and lower extremity muscles. Chapter six explains testing of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Chapters seven through nine explain assessment of cranial nerve function and upright motor control and present standard muscle tables. Vivid figures clearly show anatomical and neurologic innervations of movements tested. The DVD provides a firsthand look at "how to." The audio onthe DVD is clear and content is well organized. My only criticism of the book is that even though the spiral binding allows for easy use in the lab, the pages are so thin that they wrinkle easily. Each muscle group is covered thoroughly and standard anatomy references regarding origin, insertion innervation, and muscle action tables are easy to find.
Assessment:This book has more than earned its place among a handful of well known texts used in physical therapy programs throughout the world. The inclusion of the DVD may warrant replacement of the previous edition. It is a fine addition to the manual muscle testing book by Kendall, et al., Muscles: Testing and Function with Posture and Pain, 5th edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2005) .
