Purpose:Like the previous editions, the aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive and fully updated practical approach to cytopathology with an emphasis on brevity and clarity. The ambitious goal of conveying the beauty, strength, and challenge of cytology is certainly met by this book.
Audience:Both practicing and training cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, and others interested in cytology will find this useful. The editors and contributing authors are experts in the field of pathology and cytopathology.
Features:Chapters follow a consistent format: indications, sample collection and preparation; recommended terminology for reporting results; accuracy; normal elements; and the diagnosis of benign and malignant lesions with an emphasis on differential diagnosis. The color images are outstanding and beautifully illustrate the numerous entities detailed in this book. The tables and bulleted summaries throughout each chapter highlight the cytomorphology and differential diagnoses of most entities, allowing for practical quick reference. Where relevant, ancillary studies (flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry) are included. Like the previous editions, correlation with surgical pathology and clinical correlation isemphasized. For example, chapter 1 includes the recently revised algorithms of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology for managing women with abnormal cervical diagnoses. The online version is easy to search and the images are of exceptional quality.
Assessment:This is an impressive cytology book. The new edition is necessary to incorporate current diagnostic terminology, ancillary techniques, and updated clinical management. The numerous high quality color images and concise, practical text make this book a pleasure to read and reference.
