Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Carole A. Kenner, RNC, DNS, FAAN (University of Oklahoma College of Nursing)
Description:This book presents the challenges that nurses face in today's healthcare arena, using a viewpoint and debate format to get beyond a factual presentation of the material. The previous edition was published in 2001.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a forum for respectful professional debate on the issues that affect the contemporary healthcare environment. These worthy objectives are met.
Audience:The audience is undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and international students. While the editors suggest this has a nursing focus, the book could be used with interdisciplinary students as well.
Features:The content reflects the challenges for all advanced practice nurses, faculty-educators and researchers, and staff nurses. Topics include the old familiar ones of the definition of nursing from bedside to research, the future of nursing education, the international educational challenges, and service learning models. The book moves into new areas with emphasis on business coalitions, politics, corporatization of healthcare, healthcare costs, forensic nursing as a growing specialty, and bioterrorism. The unique way these chapters are divided into viewpoint presentations, stating one side of an issue, to debate presentations, giving both sides of an issue, is a wonderful teaching strategy.
Assessment:To date, there is no contemporary issues book that uses the viewpoint/debate format. None cover the breadth of topics that this book does. This edition fills a gap in current nursing issues texts.
