Amelia Peabody, that indomitable Victorian, embarks on her first Egyptian adventure armed with unshakable self-confidence, a journal to record her thoughts, and her sturdy umbrella. On her way, Amelia rescues a young woman and helps her elude her rascally lover.
Thirty-one-year-old Victorian gentlewoman Amelia Peabody has not only inherited her father's fortune, but she is also blessed with his strong will as well. Now she's headed for Cairo, accompanied by a girl with a tarnished past, to indulge her passion for Egyptology. Little did she know that murder and a homicidal mummy lay in wait for her.
More Reviews and RecommendationsBarbara Mertz is a woman of many talents. With a Ph.D. in Egyptology, her first published books were captivating nonfiction reads about life in ancient Egypt. As Barbara Michaels, she has written gothic suspense novels with spellbiding supernatural elements; and, as Elizabeth Peters, she has authored books in three different series -- most notably a sequence of mysteries set in 19th-century Egypt, featuring the intrepid archaologist/sleuth Amelia Peabody.

September 05, 2009: If your looking for an exciting adventure into another world when you're stuck at home on a rainy day, this would be the book. The main character, Amelia Peabody, is a female Indian Jones, as she runs through the sands of Egypt accompanied by the beautiful Evelyn Forbes. There she meets Emerson, her future husband, and his brother Walter, they discover a mummy that is haunting their camp, and appears to be smitten with Evelyn. With Amelia's talent for thinking sensibly and her amazing knowledge of medicine (for a woman of her time), she does nothing short of saving everyone.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a mystery.I Also Recommend: Lion in the Valley (Amelia Peabody Series #4), The Curse of the Pharaohs (Amelia Peabody Series #2), The Mummy Case (Amelia Peabody Series #3).

August 17, 2009: This book, along with the rest of the Amelia Peabody series, is written in the first person form. From the point of view of this animated late 19th century woman, Egyptology never looked better. The main characters are very appealing. The mix of history and mystery is a perfect combination to keep me reading late into the night and not regretful of the missed hours of sleep.
