      Synopsis

The materials you need, the way to hold the hook, and directions for dozens of stitches: here is essential information for any newcomer to crochet. All of this and much more appear in this bountifully illustrated beginner's guide. Start out learning the 3 basic crochet stitches and quickly move on to making geometric forms, lace patterns, edgings, and seams. By the time you've worked your way though the large selection of stitches and weaves, you'll have mastered over 50 fundamental techniques.

      Library Journal

Crystal-clear color photographs abound in this crochet manual that nearly lives up to its subtitle. Originally published in Italian as Scuola di uncinetto, it covers more than 50 different techniques, including those only cursorily addressed in other crochet manuals (e.g., Tunisian crochet, Filet crochet, and embroidering over crochet), with an emphasis on learning from photographs instead of written instructions. An excellent reference for beginning and experienced crocheters, this is highly recommended for large public libraries and for small libraries where demand warrants. November 19, 2006: The previous reviewers are correct that this book has a little bit of everything (including broomstick crochet) but the organization is ackward and the instructions very generalized. they tend to gloss over details and say things like continue. Not repeat row 4 or anything so specific but continue...continue rows 1-4 or just the last row? your guess is as good as mine. Also within one pattern they show many variations (good idea - bad execution) but very simple and general directions. I expected more and found the instructions too frustrating to keep the book. The pictures are great and the number of different types of crochet is good.
