    Doody Review Services

Reviewer:David J. Dries, MD (University of Minnesota Medical School)
Description:This is an update of a multiauthored, comprehensive textbook of clinical aspects of critical care of the adult patient.
Purpose:A clinical "best practice" review for clinicians is provided.
Audience:Senior trainees and practitioners will benefit from this work. The authorship of the earlier editions was concentrated at the critical care program of the editors, but it has broadened to an international group of experts with this third edition.
Features:The book is organized in a traditional manner, beginning with common procedures and proceeding through organ system considerations. Significant attention is given to cardiovascular problems in the intensive care unit with an impressive group of chapters on hypovolemic, obstructive, cardiogenic, and distributive shock. Another enhancement is the inclusion of additional work on perioperative intensive care in the setting of injury, cardiac surgery, and surgical subspecialties. Chapters are well written and extensively referenced with citations dating to within two years of publication. The majority of chapters cite primary literature while occasionally including contemporary textbooks in reference lists. Flow diagrams, tables, line drawings, and radiographs reproduce with good quality. Another improvement is the addition of attractive color schemes to distinguish chapters in each section of the text. The table of contents divides chapters into nine parts and lists authorship, and a detailed subject index includes separate citations for figures, tables, and material contained inboxes.
Assessment:This book has matured significantly from the second edition published in 2003. The breadth of authorship increases the authority of chapters beyond the traditional strength of this book, the discussion of shock states. From cover to paper stock and presentation, production quality is greatly improved.
