Synopsis

This popular reference provides a comprehensive review for the nurses preparing for critical care certification through the CCRN exam and those who wish to keep apprised of the current updates in the field.

Annotation

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Barbara E. Covert

This book is a comprehensive critical care review. Each chapter reviews anatomy and physiology, disease processes, nursing management, goals, and outcomes. The purpose is to prepare a critical care practitioner for AACN's critical care examination. Objectives stated at the beginning of each chapter outline areas the student should focus on and include a percentage of test questions the student can expect the examination to cover. The text is designed to be used by all critical care nurse practitioners preparing for the CCRN examination, but it could also be used by a novice practitioner as a study guide during the orientation process to critical care. Discussions of current trends and state-of-the-art practices in critical care compiled from experts in the field are included. Each chapter addresses specific topics related to a particular organ system, stressing key information the practitioner needs to know. Tables, figures, and illustrations summarize and emphasize important facts and data. The practice exam allows students to test their comprehension of the readings to better prepare them for the certification exam. A nurse manager could also use these exams to test the knowledge base of a new staff member. Combining text with practice exams makes the book an ideal reference book and study guide. The concise but comprehensive content of this book makes it an excellent resource for any critical care unit or hospital library. It is much more than a preparation review for the CCRN exam and can be effectively used in many different ways. It is an excellent introduction to critical care for the beginning nurse practitioner as well as a quick, handy reference tool for the veterancritical care nurse. It fulfills its promise in successfully preparing a nurse for the critical care exam.
