    Synopsis

    Chapter 1.

    VOYA

The "orgs" (humans) and "mechs" or "skinners" (mechanical bodies into which the contents of deceased human's minds are downloaded) are not coexisting peacefully. Mechs are second-class citizens, scorned by family, friends, and strangers. Lia, Jude, Riley, Quinn and other mechs introduced in Skinned (Simon Pulse/S&S, 2008/VOYA October 2008) return to live on Quinn's estate. They are concerned about the growing conservative evangelical movement led by Rai Savona's Brotherhood of Man to force BioMax to cease production of mechs and the movement's impact on existing mechs. Lia's former friend, Auden, has aligned himself with Savona. When Lia is implicated in the biohazard death of forty residents of the Synapsis Corp-Town, she and Riley must flee. The stakes rise when a BioMax representative coerces Lia to rat out Jude and the mechs learn some incriminating information regarding the Brotherhood. Geared for the previous book's fans, this novel does not stand on its own. Wasserman depicts a depressing futuristic world in which cities have decayed and dense, overcrowded corporate towns have proliferated. Virtually nothing is natural; everything is biologically or mechanically enhanced, consequently dulling the lines between man and machine. There is some action, but not enough to sustain interest. Narrator Lia spends too much time repeatedly questioning her actions/motives and those of others and not enough time trying to improve mech/human relations. Wasserman's descriptive language enhances the story and the ending leads directly into the final book in this trilogy. Purchase only if the first book has had high circulation. Reviewer: Ed Goldberg

    Biography

Robin Wasserman enjoys writing about high school — but wakes up every day grateful that she doesn't have to relive it. She recently abandoned the beaches and boulevards of Los Angeles for the chilly embrace of the East Coast, as all that sun and fun gave her too little to complain about. She now lives and writes in New York City, which she claims to love for its vibrant culture and intellectual life. In reality, she doesn't make it to museums nearly enough, and actually just loves the city for its pizza, its shopping, and the fact that at three A.M. you can always get anything you need — and you can get it delivered.

October 21, 2009: Months have passed since the terrible accident that left Auden injured and Lia aware of how much better it would be for everyone if she just left and never made contact with her old life again.

She makes her way to Jude and his band of thrill-seeking Mechs. For a while, life is good. She has plenty of credit, she lives in a mansion surrounded by other Mechs, and has access to several bootlegged med-tech downloads. Lia is even in charge of tours around the estate for newly downloaded Mechs considering making it their home.

Lia doesn't trust Jude, but she accepts him as the leader of the group. When he insists she travel with Riley to a Corp Town to meet with his source for the bootlegged material he has been smuggling into the mansion, she doesn't have a choice. While she is there, the unthinkable happens, leaving her and Riley on the run.

Battle lines are drawn as Savona breaks away from the Faith Party and establishes the Brotherhood of Man, an organization dedicated to protecting the sanctity of human life. Savona instills fear in his followers in an attempt to start a revolution and force BioMax to halt production of future Mechs and limit the lives of the ones currently in operation.

Lia gets caught up in the cause, but as plans become more and more dangerous she begins to have second thoughts. How far can she follow Jude? Is she willing to allow him to go as far as he wants to go? Is she willing to end lives whether they be Mech or Org, to protect her own life? What will she do for the ones she loves? In the end, Lia must choose where her loyalties lie.

CRASHED is a wonderful follow-up to SKINNED. The world Robin Wasserman creates is creative and fascinating, and even though the main characters are mechanical, many still find a way to be dynamic and evolve during the story.

CRASHED is the second in a planned trilogy, and I for one can't wait for the conclusion.
