Reviewer: Adrienne B. Hancock, PhD (George Washington University)
Description: This writing coursebook beautifully imparts information along with opportunities for application so that learning may be accurate and permanent. The first two parts focus on writing mechanics and style (essentially highlights from the current APA manual) and the last part specifically covers clinical writing in speech-language pathology (e.g., reports, treatment plans). Practically every page has an example along with the "rule" and space for the student to practice.
Purpose: The author correctly points out that many entering graduate students of speech-language pathology require instruction on even basic grammar. This book gives the student an opportunity to see relevant examples, write, and receive feedback for improvement.
Audience: The author has written the book with students in mind, and has not limited the content to any particular aspect of speech-language pathology. While she suggests the book be used to guide a course, most institutions would consider it a luxury to have an entire course devoted to writing. However, the book could be used when supervisors recognize a particular problem with a student's writing. The clear organization and table of contents would help when selecting what to cover with a student.
Features: The examples of professional writing specifically for speech-language pathology (diagnostic reports, comprehensive and brief treatment plans, IEPs, progress reports, letters) , with outlines, samples, and space to practice are the book's most unique features.
Assessment: This is unlike any other book I've seen. It is useful in entirety or in parts, depending on a student's needs.
