    February 19, 2008: Just once, I would like the editors of Country Living to take out a big map of the United States, spread it across the conference table in their high-rise Manhattan offices, and let their eyes drift to the left. No, too far, editors, that's Napa Valley. Look in between: A vast country that's NOT New York, Connecticut or Bucks County, Pa. Surely there's an attractively decorated, authentic country house or two somewhere in South Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, etc., that you could find if you put in some effort. 'Note: We've seen enough of Randy Florke's Iowa farmhouse, so don't trot that one out again.' Every house in this book looks like a rich New Yorker's professionally decorated vacation home. None is west of the Mississippi. Once you get beyond the attractive cover, there's not much here to keep you interested. The homes are either overly ornate, preciously minimalist or bland. I've seen it all before. I took the book back for a refund.
