This update of the 2002 edition features new information on advancing technology and includes a CD with additional resources, demonstrations, video case studies, and interactive exercises.
Purpose:The purpose is to simultaneously present a broad range of assistive technologies and specific contexts for their use within a conceptual model of practice. The authors embed the Human Activity Assistive Technology (HAAT) Model within each application and example of assistive technology presented. This is a worthy objective as the book provides a conceptual framework that enables readers to consider the consumer, activity, and contexts for the various types of assistive technologies, using case examples, illustrations, diagrams, and study questions.
Audience:The intended audience is broad: undergraduate and graduate level students as well as assistive technology practitioners including occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, special educators, rehabilitation engineers, and vocational rehabilitation counselors. The book is an excellent reference book for both students and practitioners.
Features:A wide range of technologies are covered, including seating systems, augmentative and alternative communication systems, technologies that enable mobility and transportation, sensory aids, and technologies that aid manipulation and control of the environment. This edition also includes a chapter onassistive technology for cognitive augmentation by consumers with congenital and acquired cognitive disabilities. Special attention is also given to the service delivery of assistive technology including assessment, funding, and outcomes measurement. Case examples, photos of consumers using technologies, and examples of assessment forms are abundant and enhance the text. The CD provides additional resources and demonstrations of assistive technologies, which is important in an ever-changing field. One shortcoming of the book is that it does not directly reference the additional resources on the CD. Instead, it is left to readers to explore the features of the CD and connect them to the text.
Assessment:This book presents a broad range of assistive technologies available to consumers of various ages with various types of disabilities including physical, cognitive, and sensory. It is an excellent reference for students and practitioners. Given the continuous advances in technology, an updated edition is justified, and the CD provides access to online resources that are updated more frequently to keep up with the changes in technology.
