Description: The consultation of thrombotic and hemorrhagic problems can be extremely difficult. The data regarding treatment of these disorders is continually changing, making accurate diagnoses and treatment decisions based on the available data a process of continually reviewing the literature. Then one must prove that these recommendations are sound to the primary care physician. This book gives hematologists the backround information needed in the form of concise reviews of pertinent topics.
Purpose: This book provides in-depth information about bleeding and thrombotic disorders including basic science, treatment options, case studies, and medicolegal considerations. The authors state that the purpose is to provide in-depth information pertaining to the basic sciences to provide the foundation of clinical practice in general information, hemorrhagic processes, and thrombotic processes. This is a long-needed compilation of these topics to aid consultants in their decision making. It meets the authors' objectives well.
Audience: This book is written for the attending hematologist, but students, fellows, and residents can benefit from its wealth of information. Topics pertaining to pregnancy and neurologic states are also extremely helpful to those specialties as well as to internists who see patients with all these problems. The authors are well known and respected members of the thrombosis and hemostasis community.
Features: There is a complete discussion of the basic laboratory tests used commonly in thrombosic and hemostatic consultations as well as other issues including insurance, cost, and medicolegal issues. Topics are presented as a review of basic science, clinical applications, and practical applications with an effort to discuss questions that will be asked by other physicians and to discuss controversies or "grey areas" in the treatment of these disorders. Ethical issues are also well covered, an unusual and welcome addition. The book is dedicated to C. Lockard Conley, MD, who has been a great influence on both the authors and the entire hematology community. The dedication is a beautifully written testament to a great mind and a great man.
Assessment: This is a valuable resource for a busy hematologist. It contains all the pertinent information and provides this information in a compact package. It is an essential part of the library of anyone who treats patients with hemorrhagic or thrombotic disorders.
