Synopsis

Fearless counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp finds himself directly in the line of fire in the latest riveting political thriller from New York Times bestselling author Vince Flynn.

For years, Mitch Rapp's bold actions have saved the lives of countless Americans. His battles for peace and freedom have made him a hero to many, and an enemy to countless more. In the tangled, duplicitous world of espionage, there are those, even among America's allies, who want to see Mitch Rapp eliminated. They have decided the time has come.

Now, the powerful father of a dead terrorist demands vengeance in its simplest form -- an eye for an eye, and Rapp instantly becomes the target of an international conspiracy. This time, he must use all of his vigilance and determination to save himself before he can turn his fury on those who have dared to betray him.

Consent to Kill takes listeners behind the headlines and catapults them to the front lines of the global war on terror. It sizzles "with inside information, military muscle, and CIA secrets" (Dan Brown). Vince Flynn mixes military technology with his exclusive knowledge of Washington politics to create a hero that Americans will wish existed outside the realm of fiction.

Publishers Weekly

A veteran of more than 800 unabridged novels, Guidall brings his considerable talents to this latest thriller featuring CIA assassin Mitch Rapp. This adventure finds Rapp the target of a billionaire Saudi, who blames Rapp for his son's death and has put a $20-million bounty on the American operative's head. Accepting the offer is a husband and wife assassin team who may be the equal of the seemingly invulnerable Rapp. What follows is an intricate story of death, betrayal and revenge. Guidall's smooth, confident narration and fully developed characterizations make for a first-rate listening experience. He handles Flynn's detailed, and at times long, exposition with ease, while effortlessly switching voices and accents in his portrayal of the book's international cast of characters. He nicely avoids turning the sometimes over-the-top writing into a melodramatic cartoon and keeps the story straightforward and suspenseful. It's a credit to both Flynn and Guidall that this trio of cold-blooded assassins are humanized, which makes the rather surprising ending all the more effective and moving. Simultaneous release with the Atria hardcover (Reviews, Sept. 12). (Oct.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

October 22, 2008: Consent to Kill" is one of Vince Flynn's better thrillers starring the brutal CIA hit man Mitch Rapp. Flynn is nether a great writer nor an exceptional stylist, but he tells a great high-concept story, which is a sine qua non in the thriller genre.

In "Consent to Kill," Rapp is put on a hit list by a Middle Eastern potentate seeking revenge. Throughout the book Rapp must survive attempts on his life and also attempts by duplicitous power-hungry politicians to sully his reputation in Washington.

One assassin in particular, a German who doesn't fail his assignments, has Rapp's number. He even succeeds in killing Rapp's wife--by accident. Rapp was supposed to die in her place. Speaking of revenge, now Rapp has revenge on his mind. Devastated by his wife's loss, he seeks her murderer with a single-minded ruthlessness that only Rapp could be capable of.

This is a deft thriller that in many ways reminded me of Frederick Forsyth's classic "Day of the Jackal" with its intricate detailing of the manner in which a professional hit man goes about his business.

June 24, 2008: Good story that was thought-out, but I didn't really care for his writing style. I'd like to see what Stephen King could do with it, but that's just me.
