    February 02, 2009: With the book selling so well, our publisher at Wiley has asked the authors to post a welcome review for all the customers who have bought Computer Forensics for Dummies. Feel free to send any comments or questions, especially if you find something we need to improve or change. For those of you thinking about purchasing this book as your entry into computer forensics: thank you for considering our book as your first choice!

    In the last four months I have been "on the road" doing book signings and interviews for various news outlets and the response has been incredible. The number one question most people have is, "Do I have to be a technical person to understand computer forensics?" The short answer is no, but let me explain before expert computer forensic investigators start throwing things at their monitor!!

    To understand the concepts of how computer forensics works requires no technical knowledge beyond knowing basic parts of a computer such as storage devices, memory types such as RAM or ROM, and conceptually how data is stored in todays computers.

    Having said that, in order to be a technical expert in computer forensics you absolutely must be a technical expert with regards to how computers work! Think of it this way, I can understand the concepts of how open heart surgery works, but if I need to actually do the surgery I need to be a technical expert in the field of surgery. At least I hope this is how it works with open heart surgery...

    The second thing I tell people interested in the field is that they must have a very large curiosity streak. Some of the best forensic investigators I know are always asking themselves who, what, when, where, and why! Like most things in life, if your personality fits the type of job you do, more than likely you will be very good at your job and enjoy it. Forensic investigators that love to ask questions and dig until they find what they are looking for are by far the happiest and most skilled in our industry.
