Reviewer:Robin L. Bissinger, MSN, RNC, NNP (Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing)
Description:This book provides an in-depth discussion of complex neonatal physiology and pathophysiology as well as an overview of embryology. Several specialty chapters discuss new trends and issues impacting neonatal care. Case studies assist the reader in the application of complex information and a Web site provides additional case studies, tools and resources, and exam questions that enhance learning. The previous edition was published in 2002.
Purpose:The purpose, according to the authors, is to provide a complete physiologic and embryologic foundation for each neonatal body system; a discussion of the integrative management in specialty areas of neonatal care; and an overview of new trends. These are important objectives in neonatal nursing and the authors meet them with the book and Web site.
Audience:This is designed for nurses caring for newborns and their families as well as for any healthcare professionals concerned with neonatal care. It provides a framework for the embryologic, physiologic, and pathophysiologic approach to care that would assist not only new nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit, but also experienced nurses and graduate neonatal nurse practitioners. It would also provide a foundation for neonatal medical students and house staff. The authors are experts in their field and are known nationally.
Features:The book offers an overview of embryology and a comprehensive discussion of the physiology and pathophysiology related to each neonatal system. The clinical chapters related to systemsand disease at the beginning of the book are the foundation for neonatal care. Some embryology is mixed into the systems chapters, but there is a chapter on fetal development and critical periods at the end of the book. Specialty chapters cover neonatal risk factors, transport, resuscitation, genetics, developmental care, family, and several other topics related to neonatal trends and advances. The companion Web site provides additional resources including case studies, exam questions, competency-based nursing education, and tools for families. Fetal and high-risk maternal care, as well as basic neonatal assessment, seem lost at the end of such a comprehensive book and might be better placed at the beginning of the book.
Assessment:It is essential that neonatal healthcare providers develop and maintain advanced knowledge of the management and treatment of critically ill newborns and their families. This book offers an essential foundation in neonatal disease and covers specialty issues in this population. It provides detailed discussions as well as a broader perspective of neonatal care. It outlines current issues in neonatal care related to genetics, surgery, palliative care, and pain. This new edition provides additional resources that allow readers to apply knowledge to practice.
