Michael W. Sullivan

This book contains a consideration of the complications arising in the diagnosis, operative management, postoperative care, and long-term treatment of the trauma and critically ill patient. The authors aim to impart their experience in preventing, recognizing, and managing the complications associated with the care and treatment of primarily the trauma patient and also the critically ill surgical patient. The book provides a fresh perspective on the unique problems involved in the care of these patient populations. The authors assume the reader has a basic understanding of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of these patients and their disease processes. For this audience, the objectives of the authors are accomplished. The book is targeted to all those involved in the care of these patients, from the surgical resident to those who care for patients in the community hospital as well as the academic medical center. The editors and the majority of contributors are from institutions well known for their breadth of experience and excellence in the care of these patients. The book contains pertinent radiographs and illustrations depicting major injuries and clinical scenarios. There are several algorithms pertaining to the management of the trauma patient that highlight basic principles. The material is supported by current literature, highlighting several controversial areas of treatment. The table of contents is clearly laid out and the material is well indexed. The book is neatly and concisely arranged into sections covering systemic complications, those involving each major organ system, and those found in special patient populations such as the pediatric and burnpatient. For those with a sound understanding and knowledge of the diagnosis and care of the trauma patient, this book offers a good discussion of the major complications that arise in treatment of these patients. Although it may be a bit superficial for the advanced traumatologist or intensivist, it is a useful addition and reference for the surgical resident or community physician who comes in contact with the trauma or critically ill patient.
