July 19, 2009: My husband and I purchased the Grade 3 Curriculum for our son who is working on 2nd grade skills this year. We began homeschooling last year and have just started using the curriculum this summer. The Grade 3 Complete Curriculum provides ample practice problems for most subjects and presents topics in a variety of ways. This book is consumable, not meant to be resold, but I believe the price is extremely reasonable. Overall a well arranged book.

    Pros:

    1. The table of contents is fairly easy to navigate and the pages easy to flip through.

    2. Each subject is broken into units and then further broken down to small lessons that are easy for the child to complete. Each unit could easily be introduced and completed in one week.

    3. Each unit starts with a dialogue which is used to present the skill to be learned and practiced. Then the following lessons present practice problems allowing the student opportunity to master the skill. The initial wording at the beginning of the unit is geared towards the student, but it can also be used by adults to help refresh their skills at the same time.

    4. A test prep section is included in the back and is a great resource for parents to introduce test taking techniques to their child.

    Cons:

    1. This book is very large and finding shelf space for such a big resource may be difficult for homeschooling families.

    2. The curriculum is designed to be consumable and most families will probably not be able to resell the curriculum when they are finished.

    3. The book starts out with the upper right hand pages color coded, but it is not continued through-out the book. It would be nice to see each subject color coded rather than just the reading comprehension units.

    4. Some of the wording in the test prep section is geared more towards adults rather than a second-grader.

    5. Each state has different curriculum standards per grade, some of the subjects may or may not be challenging enough for the student and other supplemental resources may need to be purchased.

Overall I think this curriculum is a good supplemental resource and I plan to use it daily this year for most of our planned subjects.

October 19, 2008: I really like this book. I have been homeschooling my daughter for a couple of years and this is the first curriculum she has really responded to. I use it in conjunction with an on-line curriculum (which also works well for her)...so she gets a really well-rounded education (I think). Also, I feel like I am keeping her working at or above grade level in case she decides to go back to school. Basically, it eases my own insecurities about my abilities to provide all her educational needs. We will continue to use this for her and my youngest will start with it next year!
