Using colors as a vehicle, this volume of the "Colors" series introduces the culture of China to elementary age children. Green, for example, draws the reader into a brief article about the green rice fields that dominate parts of the country. The color's name is also presented in mandarin characters with a pronunciation in parenthesis. The article explains how and where rice is grown and the extensive work growing it requires. Tan represents the Great Wall of China. Red illustrates the Communist flag. Brown introduces the Yangzi River and orange the breeding of goldfish. Much of the information included in this volume is new for adults as well as children, but is broken down into easy-to-understand pieces. Even such controversial topics as the Communist government and China's occupation of Tibet are covered in a fairly objective manner. Communism, the book explains, tries to make sure everyone has a job and a place to live, but also restricts what can be printed in newspapers and books. The illustrations are brightly colored and provide slightly stylized depictions of life in China. It is a good book to introduce an often mysterious and misunderstood country to children and their parents.
