Description:This is the third edition of a well written and designed textbook of histology. It covers this area of science in a traditional manner, from the cell to special senses and includes a section of histological techniques. The previous edition was published in 2001.
Purpose:It is intended for use in a course in histology and the book certainly achieves the objectives of the authors. This is an excellent addition to the books on this subject.
Audience:This textbook is appropriate for medical students and graduate students, as well undergraduate students taking a course in histology as part of an upper division curriculum. It could also be useful to medical and paramedical personnel as a review source when needed. The authors have a long history with the text (since1997) and they are highly qualified.
Features:The authors treat the subject in a very traditional order, first discussing the cell, then the primary tissues, and then each of the major organ systems. The topics are presented in a traditional and logical order and the book is exceptionally well designed. The authors make use of full color illustrations, some in a 3-D format, photomicrographs, electron micrographs, and scanning electron micrographs to support the written material. They make liberal use of summary tables that are offset by a green background. Clinical correlations, in boxes, are scattered throughout the book and key words are in boldface type.
Assessment:This is an excellent, well designed book. It is attractive and would, by its design, encouragestudents to read it. The only slight flaw, if any, would be that some of the photographs are not color balanced. This is somewhat surprising, given the overall high quality of the book, since it takes a matter of only a few minutes to make such adjustments. This is more of a recommendation for the authors to consider for any future editions and certainly does not impact significantly on the quality of this third edition.
