    Synopsis

This magisterial collection of short works by Nobel Prize-winning author William Faulkner reminds readers of his ability to compress his epic vision into narratives as hard and wounding as bullets. Among the 42 selections in this book are such classics as "A Bear Hunt, " "A Rose for Emily, " Two Soldiers, " and "The Brooch."

    Biography

The only place you can find Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, is in the Nobel Prize-winning fiction of William Faulkner. The imagined lives of its residents form an exploration of suffering, love and family that has been acknowledged as one of the great literary achievements of the 20th century. Along the way, Faulkner set a tone for Southern literature that influences writers decades later.

August 10, 2009: Today's NYTimes top fiction-sellers list seems to have tons of fiction but all too little literature. And though I never thought William Faulkner could be described as "refreshing" getting back to the old master takes the reader where the place is loaded with creative oxygen.

Faulkner is at his most accessible in his short stories. Though, perhaps, most found ways into a novel. There are selection which became the Snopes Trilogy, for example.

Collected Stories of William Faulkner is a trip back in time dealing with what makes Southerners Southern. . . . and raising the question: Just how far have we come from this?
