Synopsis

This comprehensive book has become an internationally recognized standard reference on measurement of physiological and acoustical aspects of speech and voice. It is specifically written for those without a technical background and includes a wide assortment of observational and measurement techniques. It offers explanations of their theoretical and technical foundations, comparisons of instrumental techniques, and extensive graphics to inform the clinician's choice of appropriate measurement tools. Just as important, this book includes extensive summaries of test results, allowing a particular patient's performance to be assessed in a valid context.

Annotation

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

This thoroughly revised and updated edition provides an in-depth examination of the ways of measuring speech and voice and the advantages of speech and voice measurements to increase precision of voice disorder diagnosis. Specifically designed for students in graduate-level instrumentation courses in speech-language pathology, this book presents students and clinicians with the essential skills and knowledge necessary to obtain effective measurements and to make accurate interpretations of speech and voice.

This second edition comes almost 13 years after the first was released by Singular. The first edition was the first of its kind in terms of offering a comprehensive review of instrumental techniques used to examine speech and voice characteristics. This second edition is critically needed. As it stands this book continues to represent an excellent resource that can be used in courses in voice, speech, and instrumentation. The purpose is to address ways of measuring speech and voice. The reader is offered a comprehensive tutorial in each section as well as an excellent summary of previously collected data on each topic. As there is a rich source of references found within each of the chapters where the reader is directed to further information, the researcher and practitioner are provided with a resource in which normative data is summarized coherently. Some of the chapters contain technical jargon and the reader is expected to have a solid ground in speech science. There is less attention to the pragmatic problems clinical staff run into when setting up and using instrumentation. Rather, this book is a focus on what the instrument can do, what its benefits and limitations are, and what it has provided to date in terms of its use for assessing speech or voice. The authors are well respected in the field and their sources are highly regarded. They have done a commendable job covering the basic application and processes involved in instrumental assessment of speech and voice in a very thorough manner. In my opinion, this book is a classic and excellent contribution to the speech pathology/speech science literature.
