    Synopsis

This popular core nursing pharmacology textbook provides unique coverage of nursing interventions for drug therapy with related rationales. Highly praised for its organized, readable presentation, the text explains the "why" behind each nursing action and emphasizes how drugs work differently in different patients. Highlights of the Ninth Edition include new Evidence-Based Practice displays, clearly identified FDA Black Box Warnings, case studies threaded through each drug chapter, key terms with definitions in chapter openers, a comprehensive glossary, a revised art program, and thoroughly revised end-of-chapter NCLEX®-style questions.

A bound-in CD-ROM and a companion Website include videos, animations, dosage calculation quizzes, NCLEX®-style questions, and journal articles. LiveAdvise online tutoring is also available.

    Annotation

The book contains predominantly two-color illustrations, with some black-and-white illustrations.

This is the fifth edition of a text on clinical drug therapy. The first section of the book contains chapters addressing basic drug information necessary to understand and apply drug knowledge. This includes laws and standards; pharmacokinetics; pharmacodynamics; cellular physiology; dose forms and routes; methods of drug administration; and drug therapy guidelines and principles. The majority of the book is devoted to therapeutic classes of drugs and prototypical or commonly used individual drugs. The information provided includes a review of physiology, a condition for which the drug group is utilized, description of the drug group, and clinically relevant nursing information. There is also a section on nutritional products as well as drugs used in dermatologic and ophthalmic disorders. The purpose is to promote safe, effective, and rational drug therapy by providing essential information that reflects current practices in drug therapy. This book is intended as a text for nursing students and as a reference for practicing nurses. Each chapter begins with a list of terms, learning objectives, and a chapter outline, and closes with a review and application exercise. Clinically pertinent material is addressed under the headings of nursing process, principles of therapy, and nursing actions. The content covered under nursing process emphasizes the nursing process in drug therapy. Principles of therapy include factors that influence what drug, dose, and route of administration to use. Nursing actions are presented in a table that outlines specific nursing responsibilities in relation to administration, observation, and patient teaching. There is also a section on nursingimplications in the home setting. This is a well-organized, readable textbook that follows a consistent format. The drug information is up-to-date and reflects current practices. There is excellent emphasis on the nurse's role using the nursing process format. The nursing action tables are pertinent and very helpful.
