      Synopsis

In the south of Italy, between Apulia and Calabria, lies a land that is barren, desolate, and malarial, where the peasants live out their existence in poverty and in the presence of death. it was here in primitive Lucania, at the start of the Ethiopian war (19350, that Carlo Levi, doctor, painter, philosopher, and man of letters, was confined as a political prisoner because of his uncompromising opposition to Fascism. Christ Stopped at Eboli is Levi's classic, starkly beautiful account of a place beyond hope and a people abandoned by history.

      Annotation

The story of a year in the south of Italy. "A sensitive and gifted writer with a great sense of style." -- Alfred Kazin

August 26, 2000: I recently read the translated version of 'Christ Stopped at Eboli' by Carlo Levi. It is a masterpiece of world literature, and surely one of the greatest literary works of all time. It tells of the extreme poverty of southern Italy, and of the horrors that came along with Fascism. But, more importantly, it tells of undying human spirit in the face of the inevitable. The citizens of Eboli face each day with courage and optimism, even though they know that each new day brings new hardships. They work tirelessly in the fields, for little payment. They have little schooling, and for that matter, have very little to live for. Carlo Levi depicts the daily lives of these poverty- stricken people with realism and compassion. This book is a must read for everyone, no matter what nationality and walk of life.
