Synopsis

Victor Mancini, a medical-school dropout, is an antihero for our deranged times. Needing to pay elder care for his mother, Victor has devised an ingenious scam: he pretends to choke on pieces of food while dining in upscale restaurants.

L.A. Weekly

Palahniuk's language is urgent and tense, touched with psychopathic brilliance, his images dead-on accurate....[He] is an author who makes full use of the alchemical powers of fiction to synthesize a universe that mirrors our own fiction as a way of illuminating the world without obliterating its complexity.

Biography

With a disturbing but mordantly funny body of work that began with 1996's Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk has become a cult author who regularly attracts both the interest of Hollywood and the bewilderment of readers who have never seen writing so fearless, modern, and smart.

June 17, 2009: Overall, Choke was undoubtedly a novel that contrasts with other novels out there, and in a positive way. There are many lines in the story that are phrases of wisdom that can genuinely provide insight on life and can get you thinking. There were parts of the book that were too pessimistic for me, but I disregarded that since the narrator is after all troubled. In addition, certain sex scenes were unappealing, and I actually felt could have been deleted. Even with these few bad aspects, Choke can be classified as an ingenious book with psychological influences that are great to read of and that can alter your views on life. I'd say everyone should give this book a try.

June 04, 2009: Thoroughly enjoyed this read. Although I have not yet read the book it reminded me a lot of Ed Norton's monologues in Fight Club. The pattern of the story also reminded me of Fight Club. If you're looking for a book to make you feel happy I would suggest something else.
