Synopsis

THE JUSTICE KILLER

There's a twisted serial killer stalking the streets of New York City, dealing his own perverse version of justice. He kills swiftly and silently, leaving his calling card-a red "J"-on the bodies of his prey. His victims have one thing in common: they've all been jurors in the city's most infamous cases-cases in which the killer was found "not guilty." Overnight, the Justice Killer has the city in a stranglehold. And there's only one man who has a shot at finding him . . .

Homicide detective Artemis Beam made his reputation hunting down serial killers. After getting shot by an armed robber-and stepping on the wrong toes in the NYPD-he's been retired. The city needs him now, and finding the killer is his chance to get back into the life he loves. As the body count climbs and the city's legal system fails, the Justice Killer thinks he's outsmarted the cops. But Beam isn't officially a cop anymore . . . and he doesn't have to play by the rules . . .

The New York Times - Marilyn Stasio

… the ingenuity of the plot — a showcase for the cunning methods of a serial killer taking vengeance on the foremen of juries that hand down acquittals in clear cases of homicide — shows that Lutz is in rare form.

May 13, 2007: Very slow in the beginning and towards the middle. Only picked up in the last quarter of the book. Everything was pretty predicatable in the beginning, but some unexpected things did occur, which lifted the book, from dismal to o.k.

October 15, 2006: Another gripping mystery from award winning writer John Lutz, Chill of Night is his best yet. I have read all of the thrillers in this New York City based series and Chilll of Night is a spellbinder. Like the others in the series, the reader never has an inkling as to the indentity of the perpetrator. From the surprise opening chapter to the end, which I never saw coming, the middle chapters make you wonder...is the perpetrator an avenging angel? The characters are richly drawn, and two female detectives in particular reflect the vicissitudes of life that young, attractive, successful career woman must cope with. The writing is especially detailed so the reader sees every scene, feels every nuance. Chill of Night would make a great movie. Susan Nelle Sarasota, FL
