With this charming book, children will delight in learning the basic moves of chess - the most popular and challenging strategy game of all. All the rules of chess are clearly explained, step by step, assuming no prior knowledge. The lessons are reinforced by the inventive tales that George is told by his pet alligator Kirsty, self-proclaimed Grand Alligator of chess.
Chess is recognized in many countries as a useful tool for developing creative thinking in children. Although chess can be regarded as a rather complex and mysterious game, the rules themselves are straightforward. It doesn't take long to learn how the pieces move, and even children as young as five can enjoy exciting games. They will also thoroughly enjoy outwitting friends and relatives!

September 27, 2009: We found this book online after using a different Chess book from the library.
Our 5 year old grandson was begging to learn how to play chess. By the time we worked through the book one Saturday afternoon-he knew the name of each piece and how they moved and he has retained that information.I liked it also because it teaches chess notation...which I had never learned. It is very entertaining and easy to use when teaching a young child. I highly recommend this book.Reader Rating:

September 22, 2008: This is a well put together book for children under age 9. Nicely illustrated and written for it to be understood at about a third grade reading level. This book is designed to introduce chess to the complete beginner and has some instruction on introductory strategy.
