The most authoritative guide to cantillation. Joshua Jacobson's masterpiece is an ideal instructional guide for adult and young-adult students of Torah, for b'nai mitzvah students; and for cantors, rabbis, and Jewish educators of all denominations.
It includes an explanation of the traditions and a description of the practice of chanting, with all its regional variations and grammatical rules. There is detailed instruction, with musical notation, on chanting Torah and short instructions for chanting haftarah, the megillot, and readings for the High Holy Days. Charts, helpful hints, pronunciation guide, glossary, and indexes to the book complete the volume.
Joshua R. Jacobson is founder and director of the Zamir Chorale in Boston, the most prestigious Jewish choral group in North America. He holds a B.A. in Music from Harvard College, an M.A. in Choral Conducting from the New England Conservatory, and a D.M.A. in Musical Arts from the University of Cincinnati. He is professor of music and director of choral activities at Northeastern University, and adjunct professor of Jewish music at Hebrew College.
