(Paperback - Bilingual Edition: English & Spanish)
It's Cinco de Mayo! Everyone is celebrating the holiday in their own way. "Mama marches in the parade. Papa plays in a mariachi band. Abuelita cooks a special meal." Why do we celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
A very simple history of the holiday is interspersed with the story of a young boy celebrating Cinco de Mayo with his family.
This bilingual book features a section with "find what's missing" pictures and simple crafts perfect for any child's Cinco de Mayo celebration. Loretta Lopez's engaging and cheerful pictures complement Janice Levy's child-frily introduction to this important Mexican holiday.
PreS-Gr 1
A family demonstrates how it celebrates Cinco de Mayo, as Mama takes part in a parade, Papa plays in a mariachi band, and Abuelita prepares a special meal. In the midst of the festivities, Abuelito retells the story of the battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862, between the French and Mexican armies, and how Mexico triumphed. Levy provides brief information about the history and the cultural traditions that surround the holiday. The simple text appears in both English and Spanish. Lopez's brightly colored illustrations add to the festive air of the narrative, and the family's excitement is palpable. The traditional dresses, costumes, and hairstyles all enhance the book's authenticity. Appended are craft activities and reproductions of illustrations from the story with items missing (children are asked to identify them). Presented in an appealing and accessible manner, this offering will serve its audience well.

This is a bilingual title, PERFECT for school and public libraries. It is a valuable teaching aide for parents, too.
In this multicultural world, children should learn about different holidays and customs. The theme of the book is "Yes, we can!" which is relevant to our society now.
Written in a child-friendly way with beautiful illustrations, this will captivate the attention of children both in and out of the classroom.
Adults will like the author's included notes, which explain Cinco de Mayo, in historical and cultural terms. Kids will like the "game" at the end of the book, in which they have to find the missing object in order to complete the illustrations.
This is the BEST BOOK I'VE READ on "Cinco de Mayo." School districts should order class sets for each grade; the price is right.
I even gave each child a copy for a party favor!
This book is done by the same author/illustrator/translator/publisher "team" that did "I Remember Abuelito, A Day of the Dead Story."
The author has also written the bilingual titles, "The Spirit of Tio Fernando,A Day of the Dead Story" and "The Runaway Radish."
I Also Recommend: Gonzalo Grabs the Good Life, I Remember Abuelito/Yo Recuerdo a Abuelito, Alley Oops, Abuelito Eats with His Fingers, Runaway Radish/El Rabano Que Escapo.
