Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description:Now in its 23rd edition, this book, first published in 1921, continues the tradition of presenting a comprehensive pillar of modern medicine.
Purpose:This is a comprehensive yet concise authority in current medical knowledge. The editors have brought together the best of world-renowned experts in their areas to organize an overview of the accepted facts of physiology, diagnosis, and treatment. Each of the classic textbooks of medicine has been written with a particular philosophy, and this one is known for its practical, quick, comprehensive nature. This edition continues to meet that extraordinary goal.
Audience:This book is for all levels of medical personnel, from students attempting to get their arms around the extensive knowledge bank to seasoned practitioners who wish to update their understanding or review a topic during office hours. In keeping with the underlying philosophy of comprehensiveness and practicality, the editors and subject authors have used their extensive experience to produce a truly noteworthy book.
Features:It is organized in the usual organ-system manner, but what really sets the tone are the exquisite figures, tables, and illustrations that help readers better understand and remember important points. The chapters are color-coded to highlight the appropriate diagnostic tests, treatments and "other steps." The relevant grade-A evidence is highlighted along with suggested readings. These are also available on the associated web site, making the graphics immediatelyaccessible on the office computer. The index is most comprehensive and easy to use. The full text online version is extremely easy to use with an option to upgrade with revised content as appropriate, videos for procedures, self-assessment questions, and case studies.
Assessment:This is one of the pillars of medicine. The book is extremely easy to use, and the graphics are superb and intuitive. It remains a must-have for every medical library. The upgrade option appears to be a very worthwhile investment.
