Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.
As Recommended by Stephenie Meyer and Charlaine Harris.
I really liked The Hunger Games. But I love the new book, Catching Fire…Collins has done that rare thing. She has written a sequel that improves upon the first book…Katniss is more sophisticated in this book, and her observations are more acute. We see this when she notices how much more difficult it is to kill people once you know them, or when she observes the decadent (and for the reader perhaps uncomfortably familiar) citizens of the Capitol gorging and then taking pills to make themselves vomit, or with her gradual realization that she may just stand for something greater than herself. All this is accomplished with the light touch of a writer who truly understands writing for young people: the pacing is brisk and the message tucked below the surface.

November 22, 2009: From start to finish this is an absorbing read. It entertains with a combination of compelling narrative and sympathetic main characters. The plot is gripping and escapes predictability by means of a surprise ending. The novel's only flaw is the mercurial changeability of the protagonist's character. At times, Katniss is the appealing, pragmatic, cynical and kind-hearted survivor first introduced in "Hunger Games." But, she sometimes morphs into an over-emotional basket case who does illogical (sometimes ridiculous) things. Plus, her feelings toward Gale and Peeta are unnaturally skewed toward indecision. Any seventeen year old girl would intuitively know which guy she preferred. Despite these shortcomings, the book is fast-paced and extremely entertaining. It leaves the reader both satisfied and wanting more.

November 20, 2009: Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins is an exciting fictional novel. It is an amazing book to the series of the Hunger Games. It has so much passion flowing through the writing, making it enjoyable, and realistic. Catching Fire is set in a large city, surrounded by twelve districts or sections. Supposedly it takes place after the United States was destroyed. The main character is Katniss. She and her friend Peeta won the 74 Hunger Games. The Hunger Games are where 24 tributes are forced to fight to the death in an arena, until one tribute is left. For the 75 Quarter Quell there is a twist, 2 of the winners of recent Hunger Games must go back. Katniss does not want to die yet she has set her mind on keeping Peeta alive, because in the last Hunger Games, he almost got himself killed to save her life. Katniss has a lot going on in her life. When she finds out that she will be going back to the Hunger Games, she gets really scared. She wants to run away, but the plan was foiled, when President Snow, comes to visit her. He tells her that if she doesn't comply, her family and friends will die. Gale, her best friend, was whipped half to death, and her district twelve was taken over by Peace keepers. Katniss finds that making friends, before the games was a bad idea. Everyone she cared about had to die for Peeta to win. Suzanne Collins has a style of writing, that when you read you're in a whole different world, where no one will disturb you. The story is told from Katniss' perspective. With large challenging words, she describes her story. Any person who is into fiction or fantasy would like this book. If you like reading about death in action packed books read Catching Fire. Before you read this though read The Hunger Games, the first book in the series.
