The latest of installment of the bestselling Alex Cross series finds James Patterson's intrepid Washington, D.C., homicide detective besieged by not one, but two deadly killers. To make matters worse, Cross has fallen deeply in love with Christine Johnson -- last seen in Jack & Jill -- a relationship that leaves him and his family all the more vulnerable to the deadly game his murderous opponents have devised. This paperback edition also includes a preview chapter from Patterson's new novel, When the Wind Blows.
Fans of Patterson's Alex Cross series will be delighted with this latest installment. Reappearing is Christine Johnson, seen in an earlier Cross novel, Jack & Jill and the principal at his children's school, and Cross has fallen in love with her. Gary Soneji, the creepy kidnapper and murderer from another Cross book, has broken out of jail and embarked on a new killing spree, again taunting Cross that he can't stop him. And one of his intended targets is Cross and his family. If that isn't enough, there's a new serial killer whose murders are so inhuman that the news media are suggesting that he's an alien from another planet. All story lines connect in this thriller, whose driving plot will distract you from thinking about its implausibilities and keep you turning pages to the last, when you'll find yourself impatiently awaiting the arrival of the next Cross novel. Recommended for public libraries. -- Charles Michaud, Turner Free Library, Randolph, Massachusetts
More Reviews and RecommendationsNot making any bones about his bid for success, James Patterson once declared he wanted to be known as “the king of the page-turners.” While that may seem like a pretty grand ambition, Patterson is as worthy of that title as any author working today.

June 22, 2009: The 4th book in this amazing series doesn't disappoint, truthfully it's hard to read only one. I can read these non stop because each ending is deceptively left to be more ravenous, making me crave more, rather than bringing lots of closure. There is an ending, I don't want to fool anyone, but it's always open for more madness and mayhem for Alex Cross. Echoing real life, justice and truth slips through fingers, formalities and clever lawyers can make a case go either way, regardless of what really happened or with sheer luck, criminals escape iron clutches of jails and hospitals once again making Alex's life a living nightmare, yet he can't stop from doing what he knows best, there's too much at risk to simply move away or try and forget about them, they certainly have no inclinations of forgetting who's been hunting them and will stop at nothing to get to Cross.
Cat & Mouse is as explosive as any of the other stories but at one point I was stunned and shocked, perhaps Alex has finally met his match, something happens that made me question the rest of the series, will he survive in the book? One must read to find out...Patterson doesn't' seem to spare or favor his lucky boy, he gets a beating after beating mental and physical and some chapters read more like a goodbye then a continuation of the series. It's gutsy for an author to play with the reader's feeling like this, it certainly works to make the book even better, although the bad parts are hard to read when I like the main character, I tend to wish he could skip the bad parts and get to the punishment which always tastes best. Cat & Mouse welcomes back the crazed stalker and kidnapper/killer Gary Soneji...the lunatic is back and taunting Cross more than ever, if that wasn't stressful enough, a series of brutal killings committed by someone known as Mr. Smith in England, is reaching to Cross for help, as always Patterson doest a great job of bring both stories together and making the ending even better than I could have imagined. Mr. Smith is another clever creation; with his addiction to anatomy and surgery, cutting people open, but the deaths aren't random, a dark pattern is forming, only the bravest and smartest can solve it. There's a twist to the story, a deep one that really made my brain feel like someone gave it a kick, I loved it! For those who want to read in order, make sure to start with book one, Along Came a Spider, all the books are connected and the characters go though changes, loses and some happiness as well, to avoid spoilers it's best to read in order. - Kasia S.
