    Synopsis

Another term has begun at Meadowbank, a prestigious, well-respected British girls' school. The indomitable headmistress is preparing to retire and name her successor. There is a disconcertingly mature Middle Eastern princess among the students and several new staff members in residence. And a brand-new sports pavilion is the pride of the campus.

But the school year suddenly takes a deadly turn when one of the teachers is found shot to death. As the investigation ensues, it becomes clear that the killer was not an outsider—and equally clear that no one at Meadowbank is who he or she seems to be. It is up to Hercule Poirot to determine who is who—and, more importantly, what has drawn the killer to the school—before anyone else falls victim to the cat among the pigeons.

    Annotation

Published in 45 languages, Agatha Christie's worldwide popularity is phenomenal, her characters engaging, her plots spellbinding. The very exclusive Meadowbank School has never been more assured of success when the summer term begins--until their gym mistress is found murdered.

    Publishers Weekly

The classic 1959 Christie tale is revisited in this utterly charming and intriguing murder mystery in which two teachers find the body of the new games' mistress in the gymnasium, the latest victim of the so-called "cat" killer. Though not a predominant character for most of the tale, Christie's legendary Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is on the case. Hugh Fraser relates this tale with classic English charm, speaking with a pitch-perfect and ear-pleasing dialect that adds to the atmosphere. Fraser reads with sheer delight, offering a fun variety of characters, including a marvelous take on Poirot himself. The experience created is truly cinematic and listeners will be giddy with delight! (May)

    Biography

Agatha Christie is nearly synonymous with upper-class British mysteries, for good reason. She set the standard for the genre in over 60 novels and dozens of short stories, also creating two classic detectives: the fastidious Belgian, Hercule Poirot, and English spinster Jane Marple. No one could match Christie's knack for weaving clues into her stories, then turning the whole thing inside out -- shocking her readers every time.

May 06, 2009: Despite its being written in the 50's this is one of my particular favorites by Christie. I love the setting in this novel. I would never have thought of a girls school as the scene of three murders, a kidnapping, jewels, and more. I love the characters they are all colorful and realistic. The one character I really dislike was the gym teacher Miss Springer because she is annoying and a bully it's no wonder she gets shot to death in the gym. I was surprised by the ending I was stunned by the identity of the killer and its motivations. You won't be disappointed.

October 30, 2008: Cat Among the Pigeons

Cat Among the Pigeons by Agatha Christie, is a mystery novel that will always keep you guessing. I thought that this book was excellent. There is constant suspense and it keeps you wondering about what could happen next.
Cat Among the Pigeons, takes place at the Meadowbank school in London. The time period is the early 1900s. The major conflict in the book is when one of Meadowbank?s teachers is found shot to death in the gym locker room. Hercule Poriot, London?s finest detective, hunts for clues all throughout the school. He discovers that a student named Julia Upjoin was confronted by a strange woman who gave her a tennis racket. He also finds out that a certain Prince Ali, was recently killed in a plane crash, but the $50,000 worth of jewels he had is now missing. But perhaps the biggest clue of all is the strange light always being seen in the locker room.
At some points in the book there are a few challenging words, but it is still possible to understand what is happening. The story is told from an omnisent point of view and occasionally you will find some very long paragraphs. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys suspense. Anyone who reads this book will be amazed when they find out who committed the crime.
