Description:This is the second edition of a national boards and a USMLE preparatory book in pediatrics. The first edition was published in 2004.
Purpose:The purpose is to help students learn diagnosis and management of the pediatric patient through simulated clinical cases. It is a very helpful adjunct to a pediatric curriculum, reviewing 60 pediatric medical problems and helping prepare the student for the national boards and USMLE.
Audience:This book would help pediatric medical students, residents, and practitioners (both doctor and nurse) review important pediatric cases and prepare for testing.
Features:The format is much like that of the first edition. New case studies have been added and the multiple choice questions were reviewed and rewritten to ensure compliance with the test format. Section I reviews taking the history and doing the physical exam, laboratory assessment, imaging, making the diagnosis, assessing the severity of the disease, and rendering treatment, as well as following the response to treatment. It also provides references for additional reading. Section II consists of 60 case presentations. The case is presented, followed by questions which are then answered. An analysis, a clinical approach to the problem, comprehensive questions, and answers to the questions then follow. Each case also has a clinical pearls section to highlight memorable facts of the case and references.
Assessment:This is an excellent review of common pediatric problems, their analysis and diagnosis with questions and answers pertaining to eachcase. With the addition of new cases and reformatting of the multiple choice questions, this second edition is justified and welcomed.
