This is a new edition of a major textbook on the basic science of toxicology intended for both students and practitioners. Its emphasis is on mechanisms of toxicity. The last edition was published in 1991. It provides information on the many facets of toxicology, especially on the principles, concepts, and modes of thought that are the foundation of the discipline. This book is written for graduate courses in toxicology. In addition, scientists from other disciplines may find relevant sections. This is an accurate target audience, in my opinion. The illustrations are well done and absolutely necessary. The text is extensively referenced and up-to-date. The book is neat in appearance. This continues to be the premier reference book on the basic science of toxicology. The new edition is a timely update of a very useful book.

Reviewer:Bryan John Luukinen, MSPH, BA (Oregon State University)
Description:This is a toxicology text and reference for both pregraduate and postgraduate students and researchers. It may be of interest not only for students and medical personnel, but also for scientists in other specialties related to toxicology.
Purpose:It provides a complete and thorough review of toxicology, including human and environmental toxicology, as well as applied principles of toxicology. The book is well-suited to serve not only as a textbook, but also a helpful reference for professionals in the field.
Audience:The book is written for students, researchers, and professionals in the fields of toxicology, medicine, veterinary science, and related research. Though some concepts may be too technical for undergraduate students, the book is very accessible to most other audiences. The editor is the University Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutics at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Features:The book describes toxicology with history, a brief background and introduction, then moves to discuss toxicology of the whole organism, with a focus on target organs and mechanisms of toxicology, with case studies and examples from the practice of toxicology. The book is thoroughly referenced, and the authorship of each chapter by an expert in that field adds to the authoritative appeal of the book. One main shortcoming of the book is the two-tone print, with green as the accent color. Many of the diagrams are useful and clear, but the use of green (in various hues) as the single color forillustrations makes some of the images visually confusing or not particularly useful. There is a single illustration plate with full-color medical images, but it is one in over 1,200 pages. Given that there are illustrations on many of the book's pages, printing in full-color or partial-color (using red, blue, and tan - common to many anatomy, biology and chemistry texts) would be a welcome enhancement.
Assessment:This reference stands alone as the basic text in the field of toxicology. This authoritative reference is written by many distinguished professionals in the field, and offers clear, concise descriptions of the key concepts in toxicology. It is extensive and complete, covering a broad range of topics in sufficient detail. Both as a reference and as an educational tool, this book exceeds its goal of serving as a reference for toxicologists, other scientists, and students of the discipline.

**** The fourth edition (1991, ed. by Mary O. Amdur et al.) is cited in Brandon-Hill. A text for, or an adjunct to, graduate courses in toxicology, providing information on the principles, concepts, and modes of thought that are the foundation of the discipline. The present edition is revised and updated to reflect the marked progress in toxicology during this decade. It adds three new chapters, on toxicokinetics, mechanisms of toxicity, and toxic responses of the endocrine system, as well as an appendix on recommended limits for exposure to chemicals.
