    Biography

    Lucianna Samu:

Lucianna Samu spent 10 years as a decorative painter in the New York Metropolitan area working for some of the best and brightest designers and architects in NY.  She put away her paint brushes 5 years and moved to Saratoga Springs, New York ago to become an Interior Designer, Space Planner and Color expert.

She spent several years creating projects of Benjamin Moore
Paints and has been a frequent contributor to many magazines and books.  She currently lives in the 200 year old farmhouse house she and her husband recently renovated just outside Saratoga on the Hudson River.  She is currently designing the barn to bring her horse's home.

    Mark Samu:

Mark Samu has been an Architectural Photographer for 25 years working all over the country for architects, designers, and magazines.  He is a graduate if the School of Visual Arts in NYC.

    Mark & Lu:

Mark and Lu Samu have been married for 24 years and have completely or partially renovated 6 houses in the last 10.  The first major undertaking they did was a 200 year old Carriage House in Blue Point New York.  Having gone on there first vacation in 10 years to celebrate to completion on the way back from Saratoga Springs they decided if they could get the right price for the house they would sell and move upstate NY.  They sold the
house in a week and haven't looked back or slowed down since.  Although they don't fit the profile of "house flippers" (they do really think they are going to live in the houses they renovate), they have moved their whole life lock, stock, and barrel (and teenage son) 4 times in the last 6 years. They do think they are going to stay in the 206 year old farmhouse on the Hudson River they just finished renovating.  This may be true as they are building a barn to bring their 2 horse (Leroy & Mr. Peabody) home! They began their professional relationship while living on hot dogs and crackers while Lu practiced painting and Mark practiced photography of her painting and within a year they both had fabulous portfolios.  Combing their individual talents together they started to produce projects for companies such as Benjamin Moore and many shelter magazines.  In the last few years they have contributed many complete projects and images to Creative Homeowner Press for a variety of books.  They are very excited to be working on this book together.

February 23, 2009: My husband and I enjoy home improvement projects. We're often looking for new ideas or just help pulling an idea into the "nuts and bolts" of a project. This book almost didn't get a look from me; as it wasn't in the category of our current research. However, I find that Creative Homeowner publications are often very useful, so I gave this book a look. Wow, as is often the case, a wonderful book from Creative Homeowners. This book has a nice balance of pictures and text. This allows plenty of space to SEE the picture's details and it makes it visually appealing to view. Lots of pictures is a plus, as long as you know what or why you're looking at this scene. The text alerts you to what the picture demonstrates, however often doesn't give much detail on how to accomplish the look. There are some nice little quotes in handwritten font that make the book feel inviting and "personal". I am drawn to this book for inspiration from the photos, but you won't find a lot explanation. The introductory chapters walk the Reader through a process of how to plan these wonderful make overs. This has been a book I've recommended to a number of people and they have all gone out to purchase it after looking at mine. This book touches on many styles of decorating, a variety of color schemes, and many different rooms. Again, well written and informative with just the right amount of text (for me).

Now on the negative side, sometimes there's not enough text. A page can be mostly picture (a good thing) but lacks information on how to use the concept. For instance, a page on adding a detail to a room for impact but then no discussion about proportion, color choice, or balance. There are several times when I felt the advise worth taking, but there was no further instruction on "how to". This instruction would make the book less visually attractive by adding a lot of text - so I'm happy with less text and wonderful inspiration. Some people may want more details on "how to". No paint color lists, no check lists of materials are in this book... but you will find wonderful inspiration and book you can sit and feel good just looking through. I highly recommend this book for inspiration and conceptualizing your next project. Enjoy the photos, read the brief comments, and create your own shopping list of items. This is a great starting point type book; you will need other books for "how to" and shopping lists.
