Synopsis

Feldman and Nelson (both of the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology, U. of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine) present the new edition of their veterinary textbook. Emphasizing clinically relevant information, they cover the pathophysiology, clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment of endocrine, metabolic, and reproductive disorders of dogs and cats. In addition to the standard revisions and updating of material, two new chapters on Feline Hyperadrenocorticism and Feline Diabetes Mellitus have been added. The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Karen L. Campbell

This second edition has been expanded into a 785-page hardback text with 31 chapters. The book has been extensively revised to incorporate the tremendous expansion of information gained over the past decade. The purpose is to provide readers with complete, current, and applicable information on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of endocrine and reproductive diseases of dogs and cats. This book is biased toward the experiences of the authors; however the authors are well-respected experts in the fields of endocrinology and veterinary internal medicine and their recommendations will be helpful to readers. The authors state anticipated readers include veterinary students, practitioners, interns, residents, and breeders. Most of the information in the book is too technical for the average pet breeder, and some of the information will be confusing to beginning level veterinary students. This book will be most useful for veterinary practitioners, interns, residents, and more advanced students who already have a basic understanding of endocrinology and reproduction. International veterinarians will be disappointed that the authors chose to use their ^^common units^^ for hormonal assays rather than the more universal systeme international (SI) units. The authors have included a conversion chart in the front of the book. This book includes numerous excellent flow charts and algorithms that will be useful to readers in formulating diagnostic and treatment plans. There are also many excellent black-and-white illustrations. References for each chapter provide readers with further resources to investigate for additional information. Each chapter begins with an expanded table ofcontents to allow readers to quickly locate information of interest. This book will be a valuable resource for veterinary practitioners, interns, and residents. Suggestions for future editions would include incorporating SI units into the text and also providing listings of laboratories that perform the more ^^rarely available^^ endocrine assays.
