Description:This four-volume book comprehensively covers operative orthopedics of the musculoskeletal system in children and adults.
Purpose:The purpose is to ensure the highest quality of patient care by presenting up-to-date and relevant orthopedic information to active orthopedic surgeons on any topic in the field with an emphasis on surgical technique.
Audience:Practicing orthopedic surgeons are the main audience. Orthopedic residents and other allied professionals, such as physical and occupational therapists, can make good use of the book. The editors, S. Terry Canale, MD, and James H. Beaty, MD, are from the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic.
Features:This work is noted for stressing tried-and-true procedures while at the same time including newer, relevant surgical techniques such as hip arthroscopy, spine instrumentation, newer implants, and so on. This edition highlights surgical technique descriptions in color boxes and makes greater use of the bullet format. The work is further enhanced by many more color photographs and color line art in operative and nonoperative sections. These changes have made the book more user-friendly. Video DVD clips are expanded to include such topics as mini-incision total knee arthroplasty, total elbow arthroplasty, and shoulder arthroscopy. The publishers have made available a fully searchable, online edition for access to regular updates, an image library for electronic presentations, and an important link to abstracts of references.
Assessment:This is by far the mostimportant publication worldwide in the general field of orthopedic surgery. It is the most reliable source to check on surgical options at short notice, such as the night before a case. There are other books, such as Green's Operative Hand Surgery, 5th edition (Elsevier, 2005) and Lovell and Winter's Pediatric Orthopaedics, 6th edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2006) , that go into more detail in subspecialty areas. I very highly recommend Campbell's to all practicing and future orthopedic surgeons. It is a must for all medical science libraries, hospitals, or surgical centers as a premier orthopedic surgery reference source.

September 21, 2007: For the orthopaedist, while in instruction and for the rest of his life. As a text book that is seen as a bible on its field, Campbell will be for a long time the only book one goes back once and several times again. It is a text for every single thing in orthopaedics, maybe the only book I would buy every 2 editions or so on. This seem to be my 6th edition during my carrer, and hope will not be the last one.
